ALT-5 How to Organize your Vehicle

From 3arf

Organized cars mean happy passengers. After all, how many times do we have to apologize about the piles of trash to our passengers unlucky enough to be riding in the back seats of our car? After a while, it gets tiresome and downright annoying to be moving the piled-up items out of the way, just to make some leg room for our friends and family who are riding with us. However, even when a thorough car cleaning is unavoidable, most of us tend to procrastinate with cleaning our car, just like we sometimes tend to put things off to another day with everything else in our lives. At some point, the trash/useless stuff pile will grow too big and we no longer will be able to just push it aside.

The easiest way to begin the cleaning process is to simply open all the doors and take everything out of the car. Even the stuff that you might think you will be needing in the future has to be taken out. It is the process of deep, thorough cleaning that will leave your vehicle spotless, pristine, and more organized than ever at the end.

After the car is completely cleaned out, start vacuuming all the surfaces, wipe the dashboard with a wet microfiber cloth and a damp q-tip that will allow you to get the dirt out of even the tiniest of crevices. Spraying the upholstery in your car with fabric protector is another good idea, since that will protect the fabrics from staining in the future.

Then, after the cleaning is done, it is time to figure out just what necessities you will need to have in your car. Ask yourself how you use your car. Is it for recreational purposes only, or do you drive it to work the most? By thinking about actions you perform most often in your vehicle, you will now begin to think of specific items that are absolutely necessary to have in the car at all times. In thinking about those items, also think about ways you will need to keep them organized. For example, if you have an extensive CD collection that you simply must have with you on the road, purchase a visor CD holder that will prevent your CDs from spilling over in your car.

Organizing the trunk of your car can be tricky too. Who would have thought that you could have an extensive garage sale just by selling all the stuff that's been collecting dust in your trunk? It is nice to have a trunk organizer which can typically hold all the items to keep your car going, such as a can of motor oil, a coolant, a flashlight, etc. Another useful organizing tool to have is a cargo net that is good at restraining bags of groceries, sports gear and other miscellaneous items.

Always think of safety. Put the items that you use most often in places where they will be easy to reach. You do not want to take your eyes off the road to look for something in the back seat. Do not put anything on the floor, as it is not only dangerous but also creates the most mess. For example, keep your insurance and registration cards in your glove compartment. If you must use a cell phone, keep it near you, even if it means putting it in a cup holder.

Finally, once the inside of your car is organized and looking perfect, you might want to complete the process by cleaning the car on the outside. Sure, it's a bonus add-on, but it will be sure to give that "Ah, I'm finally done" feeling. So now that your car looks better than it did when you bought it, your only task is to maintain the newly-set level of cleanliness. After all, maintaining cleanliness is much less cumbersome than spending your entire Saturday repeating the above-described process all over again.
