ALT-5 Diy Automotive Repair how to Change a Flat Tire

From 3arf

So how is it going to be ? just get off work go to your ride to find the tire flat! Driving down the road when the steering gets really soggy and you hear the drumming of the flat tire . Either way your stuck with the dreadful task at hand. just to keep things intresting suppose the RIDE is a one ton dually. Now I got you thinking, what ya going to do? Well first thing is to look around to make sure you can change a tire where you are at. Make sure it is in a safe place on solid ground. Set your brake be sure the vehicle won't move when you turn a lug nut which you will need a wrench for .Now you can see if you have the tools to do the job. Now ,had you done your home work and planned on some day having to change a flat tire you would be prepared with a pair of gloves, waterless hand cleaner, towels or rags,an electric air pump, a tire pressure guage,a plug repair kit, a jack and handle and a lug wrench that fits. We will presume everything is where it should be. Now you've got the rig in a safe place on solid ground ,got the tools , first thing check for a spare tire . Sometimes the spare is under the back of the truck. They can be real difficult to get down say they been there five years. Whatever mechanism was used to hold the tire is real likely to be good and stiff! Once you get the tire down check to see how much air is in the spare, if the pressure is real low you may be just switching a flat for a flat. Lets say the spare is flat, You can air it up with the compressor. If the spare is flat and has a small hole, you can find it may be repaired with the plug kit and aired up with the compressor. You my friend are not so lucky what you have is a blown front tire. In your inventory you find a pair of raggedy holey gloves, A jack with handle and a good lug wrench. You find no spare! Hey not to worry on duallys you have two spares! Their just a bit harder to get, seeing how their mounted to the end of an axel. The rear dual will fit on the front axle. Before you get all anxious with the jack , Break loose all the necessary lug nuts. The rig sitting on the ground will keep the tire from spinning when you loosen the lug nuts. Only a turn or so should do to get things so they will come apart easy. Now in this situation you've got to get a replacement tire first. So jack up the rear axle first. Make sure the jack is supported in case of the ground being soft. Remove the rear tire that will fit on the front and replace the other wheel. Now you have made a dual a single on the rear and aquired a spare. Tighten the lug nuts snug on the jack then tighten again after the tire has been lowered to the ground. Now you can attend to the flat on front.Loosen the lug nuts. You may not be able to do this with the tire in the air. Sometimes the brake will not hold enough pressure to keep the wheel from turning to break loose the lug nuts. So break loose on the ground loosen in the air. Now you can jack up the front axle. remove the lug nuts, remove the flat. Install the tire aquired from the rear axle and replace the lug nuts. Snug the lug nuts best you can. Now you can lower the axle to the ground. tighten the lug nuts once again. Keep in mind it may not be a bad idea to tighten the lug nuts after a few miles. On some cars the lugs may loosen since they were not installed with proper tools, or in the best of conditions. Your not done yet. What are you thinking about, your in a hurry! Do not forget to put everything away. now take one last walk around to make sure everything is as it should be. Now you can be on your way.
