ALT-4 Should we still be Buying Suvs – Yes
REVISED MAR 04 2011:
The argument has often been found that SUVs are outrageously huge, gas gosling and unfriendly to the environment. The purchase of an SUV should be the decision of the purchaser and in today's world the innovations with technology has made it possible for SUV's to be environmentally compatible. Automobile manufactures are designing and creating hybrid vehicles, which is a lot better for the environment and better suited for the fast paced lifestyles in today's global economy.
Notwithstanding the fact that manufacturers are creating hybrid vehicles specifically SUV's, it is important for the purchaser to evaluate the reasons an SUV is a viable purchase. If a city dweller, having an SUV is not practical since it takes up more room in the smaller side streets of the city and not as good as a small car to maneuver around the downtown core. I have often see individuals driving the oversized hummers in the downtown core, which I think is unrealistic.
In my opinion an SUV (4-wheel drive) would be better suited for someone residing in rural areas. During the winter months in a bucolic area it is important to have a 4-wheel SUV, which is better traction to maneuver in such a harsh environment. Notwithstanding, that I support the purchase of SUVs, I do have mixed feelings about the oversized hummers, which occupy our roads today. I personally believe those particular vehicles are too big for both the cities and should remain where it was intended for to begin with. The desert areas and for military utilization. In comparison to the regular SUVs, hummers have no place in the city limits.
I personally reside in the country and some winter days I am snowed in. I have a two wheel drive, which is not practical for my present environment. My vehicle was initially purchased at the time I resided within city limits. I have had the experience in driving in an SUV and I feel a lot safer than in a smaller car, which can easily get into an accident. There are many things to take into consideration also, bad weather conditions, off road environment these are but a few such examples why an SUV should still be purchased.
Furthermore, going on extended trips including camping trips, an SUV is a practical thing especially if there are children involved. Going on such excursions an SUV is a lot more spacious and better equipped in terms of safety and durability. Alike an SUV, a regular vehicle will not provide the roominess and durability.
Hence, with the continued innovations with designs manufactures will be able to produce better designed hybrid models of SUVs, which will be more economical and well suited with the environmental standards, which exist today. Essentially for those reasons my response is "yes" if that is the personal choice you have.
