ALT-4 Are Electric Vehicles the Answer to High Gas Prices – No

From 3arf

The inability for maintaining gas as fuel has created a crisis for all of us. Prices multiply over the years as the quantity available on Earth decreases. Have we changed? Yes, you could consider that increasing the amount of miles per gallon in engines can be considered as major improvement. This does not change the fact that someday, all fuel will be sucked dry and the automobiles we take advantage of is will be diminished. Foreseeing the crisis, many inventors focus on supplying cars, vans, and trucks with different power sources. One major experimental factor is the power of electricity.

While it is possible to run a car on electricity, the amount of power it takes from this source in one drive is incredible. Take a small car for example, and put in 200 AA batteries as its fuel. From experiments, it takes all of its fuel to go about 40 miles without the additional features that it has to offer. In this experimental calculation, it takes about 80 volts just to move a small car one mile. With the use of cars increasing over years, electric companies can not match up with the demand that the change would bring. Today, there are about 750 million automobiles registered in the world. Considering that 150 million are not in use for some reason, the demand for electricity would reach over 75 billion volts for every mile an automobile runs. Our countries do not have the stability to create such major changes. Even if this goal is achieved, secondary problems arise.

Setting up electric stations all over the countries and distributing out the required amount of materials to do so takes up lots of money, time, and space. Here we are, in a financial crisis that could be called the second Great Depression. Asides from China, no other country has money to spare for engine research plans. They are faced with millions of other urgent problems, such as terrorism, lack of clean water, and continuous increase of radiation from the sun. Even if they did spend time on it, the problem would take 20 years and may not be fully resolved. Because of its energy use, it would take lots of space around the world to create immense amounts of power plants. In addition, the power plants would eventually create smog that contributes to global warming.

Now I’m not saying the complete cut-off with electric cars is required, but they should not be a major part of the vehicles on the highways. A short trip with electric vehicles is encouraged, as it is cheaper and helps the environment. However, none of us should have to go though the trouble of using an electrical vehicle as the main source of transportation.  For now, we should focus on fuel efficiency as a main course for gas prices.

So what should we do about these prices? As I mentioned before, fuel efficiency is always a good option. Using bikes, scooters, and skateboards are always welcome to our environment. Any good suggestion is always worth a try, but we can not strain the limits of our technological civilization.
