ALT-3 Why it Matters to Fulfill Obligations in Business
In business, it is important to fulfill all the obligations that you have on your plate. What you might already realize, but not fully appreciate, is that one missed assignment can really damage your reputation in the business world. Businesses rely on people who are reliable and will do the job every single time they are asked to do so. If you don't fulfill obligations, it can be hard to find a job.
Why is this the case? Well, think about if you were running a business and trying to make money. If you were trying to get a product to your customers, and the person responsible for shipping the products failed to do so, how are you going to make any money? The customers will be upset and your reputation will be tarnished in the industry. Customers may come back over time, but it isn't something worth risking.
This means that if you were the person responsible to ship the products, but failed to do so, it will make you responsible for costing a business money. Why would a company want to do business with you again if you are going to decrease sales and cause another business to lose a little bit of its reputation?
Even if you were to be forgiven for failing to live up to an obligation, you should realize that a company is always going to have that in the back of its mind. If you were trusted to meet a sensitive deadline, and you fail, it will cause the company to become a little gun shy when it comes to asking you to perform in the clutch again. Ten years down the road, and many successes later, the company might still have that one event where you failed still fresh in their minds.
Professionalism dictates that either you do your job, or get out of the way to let someone else do it. If you can't fulfill an obligation, allow someone else to take it, or don't take the job at all. There is nothing worse than someone who says they will do something but fail to deliver. How is that good for anyone in the business world?
Obligations are obligations and you need to fulfill them. It doesn't matter how hard it is, or how much effort it takes, it needs to be done. Everyone needs to act like an adult and do the job they said they would do. Otherwise, it will cause others to lose faith in you and make it harder for you to have a successful career.
