ALT-3 Things to do with Dad on Fathers Day
Every year the same question arises, what to do with Dad on Father’s Day. Regardless of whether he is still a young father or has settled into retirement, he likely wants the same thing; to spend time with his kids and in some cases, his grand kids. To make the time spent with your Dad a little more special than just sitting around in the living room catching up, consider some new possibilities this year.
One of the more enjoyable things people can do with their dad on Father’s Day is have a picnic or barbecue with as much extended family as possible. Most dads love meat cooked on the grill, and eating outdoors invites impromptu conversation and gentle play in activities such as volleyball, or badminton. Also, it gives everyone that attends the opportunity to show Dad how much they love him while still having a good time doing things they enjoy, such as playing Frisbee or even tag. The important part though is that a family picnic or barbecue is a great way for everybody to be together on Father’s Day, just kicking back and relaxing in a great atmosphere.
Another thing to do on Father’s Day is to take him to an event he really likes but that is still conducive to talking; such as a baseball/basketball/hockey game, a horse race, or even a tennis tournament. If he’s more the type to prefer to engage a little more, perhaps a day of fishing would be in order, or maybe a couple rounds of golf, or an afternoon of bowling, or even some time at a batting cage. Again, the important point is that it’s something he can do with you and where the two of you will still be able to find openings for just talking and relaxing.
A lot of families make a tradition of eating out on Father’s Day, which makes things easier for Mom too, if she’s the one that usually gets stuck cooking and cleaning up. Eating out at Dad’s favorite restaurant as an annual event can be an easy and convenient way to create a pleasant and easy atmosphere for celebrating and recognizing Dad for all the things he does for everyone in the family. Also, it’s a good idea to go to a separate place for desert, as that makes the time out even more special, especially if the place is an outdoor café or ice cream shack.
And finally, if you’re older and are someone that has a grownup life of your own, you might think back to some of the things you and your dad did together when you were younger, and then maybe see if you can’t do one or two of them with him on his special day. It’s likely he remembers those times too and looks back with fondness, just as you do. You might just be able to create some new memories that you both will remember for a very long time.
