ALT-3 Mothers Day Gifts and Activities to Make Mom Feel Special
Although there are always exceptions, most moms will agree that they do not want you to spend money on them for Mother's Day. And, although there are always exceptions, most children insist on giving something to Mom despite her request. Here are gifts and activities you can do for Mom to make her feel special on Mother's Day, and it won't cost a fortune to where she has to say "you shouldn't have; no really, you shouldn't have."
Note: the best gift Mom wants is a heart felt hug given with an "I love you." This can be given alone or paired with one of the following ideas.
Caution: depending on the child's age, Dad may need to get involved with some of these!
GIFTS OF TIME:
Mom would love a day to sleep in late. Truly late. Undisturbed and with no pressure to take care of a million things. Take care of yourself for breakfast and do not wake her. Play quietly in another part of the house. Once she wakes up, let her wake slowly and don't start begging her for a bunch of requests of your own. This is HER day; make it hers alone.
Waking up leisurely to coffee and breakfast is a nice surprise. Whether it is cereal, pancakes and eggs, or Dunkin' Donuts, she will greatly appreciate the gesture.
Let Mom have the house by herself for a day. Set her up on the couch with water, snacks, and her favorite reading materials or crossword puzzles. She may be overwhelmed with the solitude initially, but she will feel rejuvenated by the end of the day.
Enjoy a family day at a local museum, aquarium, or even shopping mall.
Give the gift of housekeeping for a day, or even better, a week. Dust, vacuum, and clean the kitchen and bathrooms.
Wash the car, inside and out.
HOMEMADE GIFTS:
Mom will be touched by your homemade card, whether you design it on a computer or make it out of construction paper.
All homemade crafts are especially endearing. Some ideas are: trace your hand on a paper plate and decorate it with streamers of photos from the previous year. Make a photo frame and put in a picture of you or one of your drawings. Fill a bottle with different colored sand; add wiggle eyes and a pom-pom tail. Paint a picture. Make a scrapbook of photos and artwork. Make a beaded necklace that spells out "Mommy."
Try your hand in the kitchen. Homemade baked goods like cookies, cake, or bread will be delightful. Or find a recipe for Mom's favorite candy and whip up your own batch. Don't forget to clean the kitchen when you're done!
STORE BOUGHT GIFTS:
If you still have an overwhelming urge to purchase a traditional type of gift, then try one of these:
A necklace or ring with her birthstone and the birthstones of her children
Manicure, pedicure, hairstyle, massage, or other type of spa treatment
Tickets to the movies for her and a friend (not you!); include a gift certificate for lunch so Mom can have an extended day
Remember, no matter what gift you give, as long as it's a gift from the heart Mom will feel very special!
