ALT-3 History of Fathers Day
It all began within the small town of Spokane, Washington when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by a simple Mother's Day song, to have a special day that she was to dedicate only to her father, William Jackson Smart. There's a day for mom, but why not for dad?
The origin of Father's Day was to show exactly how much she loved him and cared for him because of the great fathering he had done after their mom passed away. It was only 1910 when this idea came about and had caught the attention of the President of the United States in 1924, sadly though it took almost thirty years in order for there to be an agreement among Congress to make June 19th a day to reserve the recognition of Father's Day. Although that was changed in 1972 when President Nixon signed a law that changed Father's Day to be Observed on the third Sunday of June.
The idea of celebrating a day to honor our father's and forefathers expanded from the United States, all the way into Iran, Bolivia, Italy, Portugal, Honduras, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Cuba, Greece, El Salvador, Brazil, Thailand, and etc; the list goes on and on. Each country dedicating one day out of the calendar year to celebrate their dads!Father's Day is great day to set aside time to spend with your father, and a lot of times becomes a large family get together. Many families are raised with just the dad playing father and mother to children and become stay at home dads as well. Some fathers are forced into the position or have taken on the role after a wife's passing. But none the less, the reasoning doesn't matter.
This special day is designed for showing your dad just how appreciative you are of his endless love, care, devotion, and thanks for all of the sacrifices he made to get you where you are today. Half of the American population has no idea what they will buy for the holiday, and many Americans don't know for sure why they celebrate it.
The meaning of Father's Day throughout the years has sadly diminished to become just another day in the minds of father's and children everywhere. History does things for a reason, and the best reason for Father's Day is just that it's something its your Father's Day! Whether you buy him a card, take him or cook him dinner, buy him sporting goods, home improvement merchandise, electronics, or even gardening tools, the main point of this observed day is to let your daddy know how thankful you are of him being in your life!
