For writers and most other people, making a website will waste a lot of time and not make a single penny.
I have tried making a website and it is really time consuming. Unless you are planning to go full-time website is not required at all! There are also paid surveys online which don't require a site. In conclusion, most people don't need a website, but website can be a powerful tool to make money online. For making money on part-time basis, website is a complete waste of time. But there are always exceptions.
