ALT-3 Comparing the Civic Hybrid and the Toyota Prius

From 3arf

Currently, the Toyota Prius is the leader in the hybrid race, and for good reasons. While the mpg's of the Civic Hybrid and Prius are comparable, the Prius does hold a slight edge. How can this be? Well, the two vehicles use different hybrid technologies. The Honda Civic Hybrid's electric engine is designed to assist the vehicle's gas engine during periods of acceleration, with the idea being that cars are least efficient during acceleration. The Prius's Synergy Drive technology is just how it sounds. The electric motor does assist the gas motor during acceleration, but it also can propel the car by itself at low speeds, and it also assists at driving speeds to further increase fuel efficiency. One other worthwhile note is that the electric motor of the Prius also powers the vehicle's air conditioner. Meaning the car will not lose fuel efficiency while the A/C is running.

Appearance? Well, the Civic Hybrid looks like a standard 4-door compact sedan. The Prius's exterior design is not merely an attempt to look futuristic or standout, it's aerodynamic design is intended to reduce drag, and air resistance, which also help with it's overall efficiency. The Prius is a hatchback, which allows it to boast cargo space that dwarfs the Civic Hybrid, especially if you fold down the rear seats. My wife and I can drive our German Shepherd and Rottweiler around very comfortably. They can actually walk around in the back.

Technology (bells and whistles). The Civic Hybrid has a nice interior and offers standard ammenities and driver controls. The Prius, however, has a touch screen interface to control the radio, climate, and the optional navigation and Bluetooth. The Prius also has a full complement of steering wheel controls. Making controls so convenient that the driver never has to take their eyes off of the road. Another really nice option is the SMART entry system. You never have to take the keys out of your pocket. The vehicle senses the remote and will unlock your hand is placed through the door handle. Then it has a push button start. Again, offering technology that makes everything ridiculously easy. A big plus is that you can't lock your keys in the car. The car won't lock if their inside. Of course, that's only if, for some reason, you took the keys out of your pocket.

The Prius teaches you to drive more efficiently. The Information display on the touchscreen, displays real-time fuel efficiency and shows the efficiency in five minute intervals over a half hour period. You can see how your driving habits affect your mileage and potentially improve your driving abilities as a result of this graphical interface.

In the end, it will always come down to personal preference, and either car demonstrates good social and environmental responsibility. However, from the standpoints, of technology offerings, interior space, and cargo space, the Prius is the clearly superior choice. I've had my Prius for 4 years. I average 48mpg and put about 18000 miles/ year on this very reliable car. People laughed at me 4 years ago when I bought this "silly looking" car...We know who's laughing now, as we quickly approach $4.00/gallon.
