ALT-3 Best Gifts for Newly Met Friends

From 3arf

Recently I was invited to a birthday party of an acquaintance. Baffled at what to buy this woman, I pondered what the perfect gift is for someone you don't know. After asking a close friend what she does in this situation, I got the normal response of "gift cards." Certainly sounds like a good idea since it allows the birthday girl to purchase what she wants. Then again, I'd feel like I took the easy way out.

Over a cup of thought, also known as coffee, I compiled a list. It's not a list of things to go out and purchase such as "one size fit's all" presents. It's a list of questions to consider in narrowing your choices down.

1. What do you know about this person? Make a list.

2. Who do you know that also knows this person?Maybe the mutual friend would like to tell you more about the likes/dislikes of your acquaintance.

3. How often do you see each other?

4. What's the age of the person in question?

5. What special occasion is being celebrated? What's the theme? If it's a birthday then it's not age. Birthdays are about life and hope.

Putting it all together:

Knowing that the birthday girl often gets migraines, I decided a migraine package at the local spa would be appropriate. However, going this alone would be too personal from an acquaintance. Several of us from the office pitched in to purchase a lovely package that included a body massage, migraine massage, facial and reflexology. In addition, we each brought a small bundle of flowers. The other party goers brought the regular arsenal of candles, holders, and picture frames. Even though we did opt for the gift card, it was personal and extremely appreciated.
