ALT-3 Are Electric Vehicles the Answer to High Gas Prices – No
High gas prices are a fact of life. Don't bother to dream about petrol ever coming down to price levels of years ago. It's not going to happen.
Electric vehicles are not the answer. Sure, if everyone drove electric vehicles say with a small petrol engine keeping the charge up in the batteries the world's supply of oil would last longer than now with the present level of consumption but it is definitely not the answer. Sooner or later the cost of materials for batteries , copper in the motors etc would equal the cost of petrol.
All throughout the world ,day in and day out humans repeat the same cycle. You get up, have breakfast ,commute to work and at the end of the day commute home again. I have to ask you "Why?" Why,Why,Why? Why does everybody have to converge on the city hub every day? It's sheer madness. If you drive to work why do you have spend hours in peak hour traffic commuting to work and then commuting home?
I think the time has come to revise the whole work force in the manner of operation. With the advent of laptops and home personal computers surely a large percentage of the workforce could work from home. You have shopping villages operating twenty four hours a day. Why can't business do the same. Spread the staff to work shifts and only require essential staff to commute. Am I being too simplistic? Probably. I am sure that those two suggestions however who work wonders in dealing with high gas prices.
Think about it. Instead of having everyone on the road at once you have staggered times because of twenty four hour business. With a large proportion of people working at home and/ or without the need for daily commuting to work then you do away with people wasting petrol crawling along in peak hour traffic. Who know? Because there would be less petrol demand than now petrol prices may even stabilize.
Some financial institutions employ mobile lenders. These mobile lenders work independently from the head office and so are not involved in daily commuting. Look around. A lot of small business is being run on the internet form home. Those small home based business probably are quite able to work twenty fours hours a day seven day a week because of the computer.
Therein lies the solution. The computer is not being used to its full potential. As stated previously city bases businesses have to get away from this commute to a central office every day mentality. There must be thousands and thousands of liters of fuel being burnt each day in peak hour traffic holdups. Think about the pollution. Think about all those wasted hours sitting in your car. Wouldn't it be nice if instead of a two hour hour daily commute to and from work you could work form home ,be linked by computer to your main office and only have to report to the head office once a fortnight?
Electric cars may seem to be the answer but it is definitely not the answer. You cannot solve one problem by shifting it somewhere else. The key to high gas prices is to find solutions to lowering our fuel consumption until some self sustaining pollution free form of energy is found.
