ALT-2 What you can do to Save Money on Gas
With rising gas prices it becomes harder to stretch the family budget but, with a little thought, it is possible to make your gas go further.
For those with the cash, you could go out and buy a smaller vehicle or maybe one of the new hybrids. Oops, let's get real here, most of us can't afford that so how about these ideas:
1. Think about walking, bicycling (help yourself to save on gas and get fitter) or possibly public transport.
2. Make sure your engine is properly tuned and your vehicle is regularly maintained. Don't forget your wheels - ensure they are correctly aligned and the tire pressures are correct (under inflated tires are tougher on gas consumption than you think).
3. Plan ahead. Combine some of those shorter trips into one longer journey and plan your route to minimize backtracking.
4. Car pool. Ride to work or to the mall with friends or neighbors and share the costs of the trip.
5. Drive smoothly. Keep your speed down and avoid sudden acceleration and braking.
6. Try not to carry unnecessary weight in the vehicle - leave some of that gear in the garage.
7. Minimize your use of the air-conditioner.
8. Reduce drag by avoiding the use of roof racks (if it is practical) and close your windows when you are cruising on the highway.
9. Do not sit with the engine idling.
10. Do not waste gas driving around forever to find that parking spot right next door to you favorite store. A short walk won't hurt.
Try some of these and your gas costs will come down. It only takes a little thought and effort.
