ALT-2 Valentines Day should be every Day
I am sitting here finishing off this three-pound box of chocolates. The roses have turned brown and there is no water left in the vase. The sink is full of dishes from my romantic dinner. There is candle wax melted on the table. It looks like Valentine's Day has turned out to be more work than it is worth, yet again.
Valentine's Day is the time for love and romance. It is the time to show someone you care. You can be a secret admirer. You can send cards. You can get flowers. Indeed, this is a day for lovers. So, why does this day only come once a year?
The theory of Valentine's Day is for a couple to show their emotions for each other. Over the years, this has grown into a commercialized mess. Now it seems that nothing is good enough. Department stores are competing for our money and playing on our emotions. They want us to think we have to buy the biggest and best gift. They want us to believe that money can buy love.
Why do we have to mark our calendars to know when to buy a gift for that special someone? I would rather give or get a gift out of thin air. It is better to get simple surprises than something that has been mass-produced for a certain day. The World should not need an excuse to exchange and receive gifts and love.
Every day, we should show love. We can pick flowers for that someone special without paying twenty dollars a dozen. We can leave a simple note or sing them a song. We don't need the musical greeting cards. We don't have to have the stuffed animals that play instruments. How are any of those things going to be useful after the day is gone?
I would rather have someone around everyday than to get a silly little gift. To me, love has nothing to do with what you choose to give someone. If that were the case, why would you give your mate candy? That's like saying "Here, honey, have a cavity on me." Rather than giving someone a teddy bear, cuddle with him or her yourself.
If you love and care for someone, they won't expect presents because you will be gift enough. Don't use one day every year to be a hopeless romantic. Do it everyday. Live. Laugh and love like each moment is your last. Have a holiday in your heart always.
