ALT-2 Valentines Day Commercial Hype or Romantic Opportunity – Commercial

From 3arf

It's a shame that we as humans need a day to tell everyone that we love them.I wont lie and tell you I haven't bought a card or gift for loved ones and family members. My husband even gets them for friends, coworkers, bartenders, he doesn't care. He is Mister Romantic.

Now if it was just a few adults who need help giving the gift of love, I would be all for it. But it is not just for adults. The card industry targets children first. Do you remember buying cards in school? We would sort through all the cards, picking the nicest cards for kids we liked and icky cards would go to kids we wanted to thumb our noses at.

When I was in fourth grade, I gave what ten year old considers, a sexy valentine card to a a boy in school, Lee. I picked out the ones with pigs and skunks for people I didn't like. When the boy stormed up to me and threw my card in my face, I felt my ears get hot. When other kids laughed and pointed, I prayed for my desk to swallow me up.

I later saw Lee in high school. He had acne all over his face and didn't seem to be very happy. Of course most teens I knew didn't seem to be happy, but I felt vindicated that this one seemed miserable.

Lee wasn't the only jerk that day. The fact that they put skunks and pigs in the packet of valentine cards sets kids up. Us kids also compared how many cards they got. Human beings are competitive by nature- we don't need any help from the card industry.

As with most ideas, I think Valentines Day started out as a decent idea. Helping to remind us to appreciate each other with words and deeds. Relationships that are going through rough times have an opportunity (or excuse), to focus on the other person. Make them feel cherished. Show them how much you really care. I think it's more than that.

What would stores do after Christmas and New Years if not for Valentines Day? Heaven forbid if there isn't a holiday motif for retailers to follow. I would forget all about Valentines Day if they didn't have displays up on January 2nd.

Valentines Day is amateur day. People need to learn to make an effort all year long. Not just one time a year. And did you ever think about the people not getting something on this particular day. There is a cruel twist this day holds for someone alone. A person heart isn't shaped like anyway.
