ALT-2 Tips for Women Working in Construction Trades
I work will all men on my job. I work as a Piping Designer in the construction trade. I have 2 degrees and close to 10 years experience in my field. I have problems on the job with men getting better recognition and my boss treating them differently. I think it's wrong and I have definitely let him know my opinion of it. The thing that really ticks me off about it is the fact that over half the men I work with didn't go to school for this and therefore don't have a degree but yet they make more money than I do and get better projects to work on.
It's sexual discrimination and it's wrong. I believe that if a woman is qualified for the job and have to work experience that they should get treated just as equal as the men. It's really no different than a woman being a nurse and a man being a nurse. Most nurses are women but there are men out there that choose that career. The men shouldn't get treated any different just because it's a predominantly female job.
This is not the old days where women stayed home and took care of the kids and cleaned house and cooked. Many women these days work to support their family and if they are qualified for the job it shouldn't matter that they are female.
My husband works but I'm the head of household here. I have the education and I have to better job with the better pay and a permanent one. He agrees that if you are qualified for the job that gender shouldn't matter. It makes him mad so see that I work as hard as I do and I still don't make what the men make. I turn out more work than they do and my quality of work is better.
It is hard being a woman in the construction trade but I strongly believe in the person with the experience and the knowledge as being the best person for the job whether it be a man or woman.
