ALT-2 Tips for Living without a Car

From 3arf

I suppose it is possible to live without a car. I suppose it is also possible to die a virgin. What a tragedy though. To die a virgin and not know the joy of owning a car.

As soon as I reached the minimum legal age to obtain a license I started to hunt for my first car. With a car I gained my mobility and freedom of the roads to explore an expand my horizons. In the fullness of time I met my wife and we have owned several cars since we were wed.

I began to reflect on what it would be like to live without a car back then and now. The vast sums of money I have spent on cars became a total of truly astounding proportions. If I didn't have a car when I first got my license and never had the succession of cars since then I would now be a very wealthy man. Then I thought to myself what price do you put on a lifetime of motoring experiences? What is the point of having thousands of dollars in the bank if you have never experienced the thrill of driving a car for the sheer pleasure of driving your own car? That simple pleasure to me has been priceless with each new car I've bought.I would not have had it any other way ,except to avoid all the donations for speeding fines, if ever I had to live that part of my life again.

I have kept countless people in employment. If you live without a car you don't need car salesmen, car insurance people , mechanics, tire manufacturers , panel beaters and a whole host of other occupations. The tourist industry relies on motorists to tour the countryside. What better way of stopping where and seeing what you want to visit by touring in a car than being escorted in a guided tour at the mercy of the tour guide or be hurtled through the air in a airplane or whisked along some railway.

It would be nice if cars did not create so much pollution. Car emissions pollute the air. Old car bodies pollute the landscapes. Old tires are a danger to the environment if they are not disposed of correctly. Car manufactures are working to produce cars which are one hundred percent environmentally safe.Until then we have cars that run on petrol which comes from oil.Oil is the one thing that may force everyone to live without a car. Once the world's oil supplies are exhausted and no alternative to the petrol engine is invented we may have to rely on horses once more for mobility.

If you think cars pollute just imagine the stink from horses if six million people in just one large city in just one county or more commuted to work each day in a one horsepower sulky .Add up all the cities and all the countries and consider if we lived without cars we would soon be in deep "pollution" in no time.
