ALT-2 Tips for Building self Confidence in your Job

From 3arf

"The morale around here is low." "Why are they always on my back?" "They'll fire you at the drop of a hat!" "Why should I do more? I won't get paid more!"

How many times have you heard this? Time and time again the people around you are trying to convince you that the company is responsible for your happiness and your success. Regardless of how hard you may try, it's not going to matter because the company will ultimately decide who gets promoted and who gets booted. Wrong, wrong, wrong!

First of all, read your job description. Is it up-to-date? Are you fully capable of doing what is there? Do you get regular performance evaluations? Get copies of your performance evaluations to monitor your progress. How have you measured up over the term of your career? Finally, evaluate the job that you are doing. Are you doing things the same way your predecessor did them because 'this is the way it has always been done?' Or are you doing something 'different'? Document your accomplishments and make sure they are mentioned in your performance evaluations.

Building your self confidence comes from knowing exactly what is expected of you and then delivering far more than is expected. Be responsible for your own morale and happiness. When you allow the company to give you your joy, you give up your opportunity to obtain it yourself. Have a life outside of work. When you are at work, BE at work. Don't complain about your job (many people are unemployed or underemployed). Don't spend your day surfing the Internet needlessly. If you are ever approached concerning the sites you've visited and the time spent on those sites, you'll begin to feel the 'company is out to get me.' Rather, let them catch you surfing sites to improve education and productivity in the department.

Finally, come to work on time, get to meetings on time, and meet or beat your deadlines. Socialize with the right people. The wrong people are those who feel the company is responsible for their well-being. Treat your position as if it were your own company. Your self confidence will sky rocket because you are controlling your destiny. The company can't deny you're doing a great job!
