Thanksgiving is a holiday that was meant to commemorate a historic event that took place in Massachusetts hundreds of years ago. However, what the holiday has become is a far cry from the event that it was meant to commemorate. The foods, the people, the places and the event are all different from Thanksgiving's historical counterpart. So, what is Thanksgiving's purpose, if it has been rendered historically insignificant? Well, it serves a different purpose for different people, though most purposes given to Thanksgiving are common.Thanksgiving is a time for familyFor some families, the purpose of Thanksgiving is to bring their family together. Modern families tend to have members scattered all over the place. With jobs, children and other relationships taking up so much of people's time, most families do not bring everyone together more than a few times a year. Thanksgiving is often one of those times.Thanksgiving is a time for footballIn living rooms and football fields across America, the purpose of Thanksgiving is Thanksgiving football games. Some towns have local games and there is always a game to watch on television. It seems like a frivolous activity for a holiday that originally signified an important event in United States history. However, seeing that the historical significance is pretty much out the window, watching an all-American sport like football seems like a perfectly acceptable way to spend Thanksgiving.Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanksAs the name indicates, the purpose of Thanksgiving is being thankful. Whether you are thankful by enjoying the bonuses of being an American, like having Thanksgiving off, or by giving to others, you are serving Thanksgiving's purpose. Some people choose to spend their Thanksgiving giving thanks to god; others like to show how thankful they are by giving time or food to the less fortunate. Spend it how you want to spend it. If you want to go traditional, be sure to include the simple fare that was probably enjoyed by the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving dinner. Though, why anyone would want to have an authentic Thanksgiving dinner is a mystery.
