ALT-2 Serenade your Lover on Valentines Day Romantic Song Choices

From 3arf

Are you going to be that guy? You know that nutty, romantic, all or nothing guy forever embodied in John Cusack's character Loyd Dobler during the movie, "Say Anything'? I'm referring to the famous scene where he holds up his big, silly boom-box under the girl's window, staring up with that intense, puppy dog appeal that John Cusack is so good at. He really puts it out there in that scene. The girl could shoot him down, she could throw things at him, she has all the power to make him miserable; after all, he's just a crazy guy with a boombox disturbing the peace. But you know what happens? Good ol' Lloyd, he gets the girl.

Never underestimate the sheer, mindless power of an outrageous, romantic gesture. Women of all species are designed to respond to the showy feather display, the impressive beating of the chest, the strutting rivalry and foolishness which marks the masculine mating ritual.

In modern times, men are more limited in their approach to the crazy show of heartfelt desire. I suppose a man could tie on a loincloth and beat his chest before swinging his Jane of choice into the tree-tops, but it's likely that such a display will earn you the moniker 'looneybin', not to mention someone will probably call the cops.

A giant diamond ring may woo your lady love, but this is more of a one time deal. Unless your Onassis, you won't be flinging diamonds at your girlfriend(s) year after year, so the modern male must come up with something new. Ingenuity will give you the edge, but maybe, just maybe you could be that guy. That nutty, romantic all or nothing guy who trumpets his love with the one, last, no fail resources available in the age of subtlety: Music.

You don't have to stand under her window with a boombox; you could show up at her workplace, you could play it as you help her into a sudsy bubble-bath. If you're extremely brave, you could even sing. So get out your blank c.d.'s, let go of your inhibitions and work out how to serenade your sweetheart to greatest effect. Don't be afraid, remember Lloyd Doblers of the world, you gotta wear your heart on your sleeve to get the girl.

Song suggestions: First mention of course, the song Lloyd played in the boombox scene was 'In Your Eyes', by Peter Gabriel. This song is a living, breathing valentine, you can't go far wrong with it. Another incredible love song is 'True' by Ryan Cabrera. This low-key, beautifully realized song is what girls dream of guys feeling for them. I have heard guys say the same thing about Alanis Morrisette's 'Head over Feet', that they wish it were written for them.

If your sweetheart loves a good voice and a tender tune, try Eva Cassidy's 'Fields of Gold'. Billy Joel's 'And So It Goes' is a wonderful, heartbreaking song and may actually mend a broken relationship if there are still feelings on both sides. 'Tracks of My Tears' by Smoky Robinson might do the same, but you'll want to sing this one to really get the message across.

You know your loved one, you'll know what they like; these are just a few ideas to get you started. Now, go make some beautiful music of your own.
