ALT-2 Reasons to Buy an Electric Car
I must confess that I bought my hybrid electric car at the height of the oil crisis. I bought it because I hate paying for gas. I would rather spend my money on more appealing things. I cannot see or appreciate gas. As time has commenced, I discovered I love the electric car because it is easy to maintain. In the five years that I have owned it, I have had no major repair bills.
Here are reasons to buy an electric vehicle and the types available.
Electric cars need less maintenance and as a result, are more reliable. Electricity is eco-friendly and is able to use renewable energy – solar or wind power. The electric car pollutes less. Most importantly, it uses national energy sources (electricity) instead of depending upon oil from foreign countries.
What is an electric automobile? The electric automobile is split into two different categories. One is the battery-electric vehicle and the other is the hybrid electric vehicle.
Battery Electric Vehicle
The battery is rechargeable with electricity and the energy stored inside it. The hybrid electric uses a fuel to recharge the battery.
The electric car has the technical advantage by having an electronic-mechanical power train. What does this mean? It means that in comparison to a combustion engine, the electric motor is more effective because of its simplicity. The drive train only requires two gears.
The disadvantage of the battery, at this point in time, is the limited number of miles it can go without recharging..
The Hybrid Electric Car
The hybrids are of two types. They are either series or parallel.
The series hybrid means that the power comes from a generator, which charges the battery. This keeps the battery from working too hard. A heat engine runs the generator to produce electricity.
The parallel hybrid has a heat engine which does not go through a generator but carries the power straight in to the power train without converting it to electricity.
The disadvantage of the parallel hybrid car is that it is expensive to build.
The electric car will help all of us as well as our planet. How will this happen? Let us count the ways:
- The dirty emissions of gas cars are putting a hole in the atmosphere and causing global warming.
- Gasoline has gotten too expensive. We are importing most of our oil. The foreign trade deficit will decline as we begin to use our resources. By importing oil, we are slighting our country to make foreign countries rich.
- No More oil changes.
- Tail pipes will not give out carcinogens to the folks walking on the street.
These are a few reasons to consider the electric vehicles as a means of transportation. As time goes on, the electric cars will improve the electrical-battery systems. As Mikey used to say, “Try it, you’ll like it.”
