ALT-2 How to Winterize your Car

From 3arf

People spend a great deal of time getting their homes ready for winter, but it’s just as important to winterize the family vehicles. Since most people spend a great deal of time in their cars, it is necessary that they be reliable, safe, and in good working order, especially in winter. Every vehicle should be tuned up and checked out before cold weather sets in. The colder the weather, the more likely that certain problems will arise where batteries, spark plugs, oil, and antifreeze are concerned. Batteries should be checked and possibly replaced, fluids and filters should be changed, brakes examined, and electrical systems checked to make sure that defrosters and heaters are working properly. If it has been awhile since the exhaust system was checked out, this is a good time to do it. Windshield wipers are just as important in snowstorms as in the rain. Make sure that there is ample fluid in the washer tank and that it is the appropriate type for cold weather. Change the wiper blades if necessary. Make sure that there is a good quality ice scraper in the vehicle and possibly a can of defroster spray. The right kind of tires are essential for driving on ice and snow and even just when the temperatures drop below freezing. Make sure to have some good all weather tires, and that they are recommended for winter driving. Not all, all weather tires are actually appropriate for ice and snow so many people actually have a second set of tires that they only use during the colder months. Periodically check the tread and the tire pressure on older tires. While no one really expects to be hung up or broken down in the dead of winter, the fact is that it is possible to get stuck in a snow bank or to stall out along the side of the road. Heavy winter gear such as extra coats, boots, gloves, and hats should be packed in the vehicle, as well as a couple of blankets. Always carry a small foldable shovel for digging out, some sand or kitty litter for traction on icy surfaces, and an emergency bag. This bag should contain jumper cables, flares, some elementary tools, and even some emergency rations such as granola bars and some bottled water. Emergency kits can be purchased already assembled at most discount stores, auto parts stores, and home and garden centers.Having a vehicle in good working order any time of the year is essential, but having reliable and safe transportation in those cold and dangerous months is even more important.
