Are you looking to get ahead at work? If you are looking for your boss to give you the guidance that you need, you might be missing out on a key motivator at work. This person is the greatest motivator you could possibly have and is always by your side 24/7. This person would be you, and you should always be looking out for yourself and how you can set new goals for yourself on the job.
Why should you be looking to set self development goals at work? Well, you don't just want to sit around and be stuck with the same job for the rest of your life, There are probably things out there that interest you, that you would work want to work on and that could advance your career. Taking on a project might be a current sidestep, but it could be the key piece to a brighter future.
The best thing to do when setting self-development goals is to figure out what your strengths are, what you weaknesses are and what drives you to do a good job. This way you can use your strengths to get where you want to go, improve your weaknesses so that they won't hinder your progress and use your passion to make sure you will put in those extra hours doing things that are meaningful.
Say you want to become a department manager. Your strength might be in working with and developing people, but you might not be good at staying organized. An outside hobby of yours might be that you like to draw on the weekends. So, what you might want to do is come up with a colorful chart that shows where your employees are in terms of sales for the year. You could maintain the chart as a way of learning to stay organized, increase sales to help develop your employees, and use the chart as a way to incorporate a hobby as a way of keeping the project fun.
At the end of the day, you have done something for the company while utilizing your skills. This also has hopefully helped you overcome a weakness, or at least make it something that you can show that you know how to deal with. This will make your boss take notice while allowing you to show off something when it comes time to interview for that department manager job.
Take initiative and people will notice. You have to be willing to overcome your own weaknesses while showing what you are worth to the company. If you are able to do that, you will be able to not only show what you can do, but develop new skills in a creative and self-starting way. Drive and hard work are how self-development happens.
