ALT-2 How to Organize your Vehicle

From 3arf

Let's face it some of us spend more time in our cars than we do at home. I am constantly on the run. It was time to get organized before amount of "stuff" I carry around with me took over the passenger space of my vehicle. The first thing I did was take everything out of the car that had accumulated over time. I threw out the junk, returned all unnecessary items to their rightful place in the house and then separated what was left into groups. The first group being things I will need access to front the drivers seat. My registration and proof of insurance along with my road maps all went into my glove box. If you have a very small glove box there are visor organizes that will allow you to store things above your sun visor. These are great for storing your CD. I got a purse size umbrella and put it in the pocket of my door. Now I don't have to get soaked retrieving my full size umbrella from the trunk. The back seat was my second area to tackle. When you have small children you have clutter. I found a very nice organizer that straps to the back of each front seat. It has zipper compartments and pockets for all of you child's toys and belongings. I got one for each seat so they each have their own storage area. You want to make sure any storage or organizational products that you use in the passenger compartment of you vehicle can be securely attached. Lose objects can cause additional injury to passengers if you are involved in an accident. What do you do with what is left? Well, that depends on what kind of vehicle you drive. In the back of an SUV or mini van my suggestion would be to put totes in the back. I like the 5-gallon totes; they are only 9" tall and can be filled with different types of items, labeled and stacked. Cargo logic and Spacemaster both make a variety of organizers that can be used in the back of your SUV or van to keep everything orderly. They run anywhere from $30.00 to $100.00 compared to totes that only cost $7.00 to $15.00, so it really depends on how much you are willing to spend to get your vehicle clutter under control. The trunk of a car is a bigger challenge because it is smaller. I've found that small totes and storage containers work best. They have lids so you don't have to worry about items falling out. Measure the space you have around the wheel wells and try to find containers that will fit into them. This will free up the large part of your trunk for the lawn chairs or golf clubs. The best advise I can give you is measuring the area for the containers and to look at a couple different stores before you buy.
