ALT-2 How to Leave them Happy when you Quit your Job

From 3arf

When you are leaving your job it is a good idea to leave your boss and coworkers happy. It is in your best interest if they are happy with you when you exit your job. Even though you are leaving them behind you never know who you are going to be working with or for in the future. It could very well be one of those people you think you are leaving behind.

If you leave your boss and coworkers feeling positive things about you you will not feel a sense of dread should one day they show up at your new job. Here are some things to do to keep your boss and coworkers happy with you and prevent any burned bridges:

1) Give proper notice that you are leaving. Do not just show up and announce that today is your last day. Give at least two weeks notice, longer if possible.

2) Offer to train the person who will take over your job. There are likely duties you perform that other people will have to take over at least for a time being. Making sure you do your best to give people anopportunity to learn what they need and ask you questions before you leave will be greatly appreciated.

3) Leave detailed notes about the status of projects you are working on. Make a list of the assignments you do on a daily, weekly basis. Make sure coworkers are aware of any upcoming deadlines on work you were working on.

4) Leave a list of contacts for your coworkers. This way if they have questions or need more information about something they can call the people you were working with.

5) Be positive. Do not voice all your complaints about the job/people you are leaving to your coworkers. Remember, they are staying there, at least for the time being, and you do not want to leave the impression that you are a complainer and a negative person.

6) Express gratitude for the things you have learned and the opportunities you have been given. Thank your coworkers and bosses for making your time at the job a good one. Even if you are leaving because you hate the company or the people you work with there has to be something positive. Emphasize that.

The best thing you can do is to leave things in order for your coworkers and try and make the transition as easy as possible for them. Do not just dump all your work on them with no explanation. Give them as much information as possible. Clean up your office space and do not leave a mess behind. Make sure your files are organized so that your coworkers do not have to go hunting for stuff that they need. If you do your best to make the transition of you leaving your job as easy as possible for those taking it over it will be greatly appreciated!
