ALT-2 How to Deal with Unfair Criticism at Work

From 3arf

Is your boss criticizing you at work, or maybe another employee working on a project with you hasn't been really nice to you lately? Things happen at work where you might legitimately screw something up, but other times, you get criticized for something that really wasn't your fault. How do you manage to deal with the unfair comments that are lobbed your way?

The best thing to do is to understand that if it wasn't your fault, there was nothing you did wrong. There is nothing you can do to change the situation, so why bother spending time worrying so much about it? Sure, it might not exit your mind right away, but if there is no real damage, it will be easy to overcome with some good deeds in the future.

Don't be afraid to confront anyone who lobs some harsh comments at you. Try to find out what their agenda is, or why they are talking bad about you. Maybe they want your job, or just don't like people. This person might not be the best at acting professional, so it might be good to put this person in their place for a second.

Realize that politics at work is a real thing. Sometimes the future is going to be murky at no fault of your own. There will be periods of time where you simply have to put your head down and focus on saving your job long enough to do something right. Eventually the boss will have a new scapegoat, or will forget why he didn't like you in the first place.

If your working environment doesn't change, you can always just find a new job, or wait it out. Either a change of management or a change of scenery can do wonders for a career. Try talking, try sticking up for yourself, but if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. That can be a simple fact of the working world. It can be easier to talk with your actions at times.

Don't spend too much time dwelling on the fact that some people are making fun of you at work. There is nothing you can do to stop others from hurling insults at you, or talking down to you. Some people are just grouchy. You can try and stand up for yourself, but remember that politics might dictate you just know your role, or find a new job.
