ALT-2 How to Change Spark Plugs
If your car is not starting that well or seems to be running a little poorly then it may be time that you changed the spark plugs. Make sure you set aside a reasonable amount of time for this process as it can take awhile, especially the first time you attempt it. Your car's make and model will determine how many spark plugs you'll need to replace. You can check in the car's manual before purchasing parts - and remember, the better quality and more advanced the spark plug; the longer it should last you until needing changing.
First rule to remember when changing spark plugs in your car is that you should let the motor cool down for at least an hour or more before attempting any work; you don't need to burn yourself in the process! It is probably a good idea to only install one new spark plug at a time. You may need to set the gap between the new plug's electrodes with a special tool but consult your car's manual or go online for specific details concerning your particular car.
Open up the car's hood and secure it. If your car is a newer model you may see noise reducing black plastic boxes that need to be removed first, You will be looking for some thickish HT cables that lead to rubber water-proofing plugs that are actually a covering over the spark plugs themselves. Remove the rubber plug over the first spark plug and fit a spark plug socket or ratchet over the plug, it should fit snugly, and twist in an anti-clockwise direction. When loose enough you should be able to remove the plug by hand, as long as it is cool enough to touch. Check the state of the plug, how grimy or oily it is; if too soiled you may need to replace your piston rings or do other further work. Before fitting the new spark plug compare it with the one that you have just removed to check to see that they are identical in make. Then insert the new plug, perhaps lubricate it a little for easy removal next time, and tighten with the socket. Refit the plastic plugging cover then repeat the process with all other plugs to be changed. Job done!
