ALT-2 How to Avoid Scams when using the Internet for Job Searches

From 3arf

While the current trend seems to be more towards people turning to the Internet as a way of landing new jobs, there are some hazards associated with Internet job searches. There are often major concerns regarding privacy and identity theft that must be taken into consideration when searching for work online.  The problem is that not many who depend on the Internet know how to avoid scams when using the Internet for job searches.  Here are some red flags to be aware of.Unsolicited job openingsChances are pretty low that reputable companies that an applicant has not approached will contact them suddenly.  Unfortunately, one of the scams that grows by leaps and bounds is unethical offers appearing in emails of those who are searching for legitimate jobs. When this type of offer appears in an email it is important that those looking for a job research the company. Research may reveal a legitimate job offer although chances are that this is unlikely.Personal financial informationSome legitimate companies do ask applicants to allow them to run a credit check. However, some people with little or no morals or ethics will send out hundreds of emails with a link in it that suggests that a person might have an opportunity at a position provided they "follow this link" and have a credit check done. These schemes are often phishing schemes that can result in identify theft, loss of financial privacy and other untold horrors that await a job searcher.  Never provide financial information via the Internet when job searching as it could lead to any number of issues. If a company wants a credit report, they may request one after the interview process.

Work on speculation

Freelancers and independent contractors are often asked to provide potential clients with "spec work". In many cases, this takes the form of asking for a sample.  While it is appropriate to be able to provide a potential client with work samples, freelancers and independent contractors should never be expected to do client specific work without some form of payment in return.

Summary

The Internet can provide valuable tools for those who are searching for work.  Whether searching for traditional jobs or freelancing jobs however, there are numerous scams that one must use caution to prevent victimization.  Understanding how to spot scams will help most people be able to avoid scams when using the Internet for job searchers.
