ALT-2 Capitol City Celebrates Easter
Celebrating Easter in Washington D.C. is a superb idea. While in the nation’s capital, locals and tourists can attend services at one of the many beautiful churches in the area, enjoy fine dining, explore the many amazing sites to discover, and even take the kids to one of the many Easter egg hunts. There are many intriguing choices to be found inside Washington, D.C. and in neighboring Maryland and Virginia. The most difficult decision to make will be where to start.
For those wishing to attend Easter services, there are several great options right in downtown Washington, DC. Some consider Washing National Cathedral as the most illustrious choice, as the President may very well decide to make an appearance for services, but there are other attractive options as well. St. Mathews Cathedral, Basilica of the National Shrine, and St. John’s Church are just a few of the choices to be found.
Visitors will have numerous exciting events to attend as they explore Washington, DC. One of the most famous Easter activities is the White House Easter Egg Roll. This annual activity was initiated by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878 and has transitioned to include sports, performances by musicians, cooking classes, and storytelling in addition to the Easter Egg Roll. Tickets are issued through an online lottery.
Those who do not receive tickets to the White House need not fear that their children will go without the experience of an Easter event. Tudor Place Historic House and Garden is a National Historic Landmark found in Georgetown’s Historic District that was originally built for Martha Custis Peter, the granddaughter of Martha Washington. This nearly 200 year old estate holds an annual Eggstravaganza which is sure to delight children with an egg roll contest, egg decorating, and even a spring basket craft. All visitors are sure to enjoy touring the gardens.
Exciting Easter Egg hunts can also be found at the Reston Zoo, Ida Leer Park, and Meadowside Nature Center in addition to Bunnyland which is sponsored by a local pick your own produce farm in Maryland called Butlker’s Orchard. On the Monday after Easter, the National Zoo holds an annual African American Family Celebration that is sure to delight visitors of all ages.
Visitors have extensive options for Easter brunch or a quiet meal after an exciting day at one of the many attractions to be found in the nation’s capital. The Oval Room, 1789 Restaurant, and Bombay Club are only a few of the scrumptious options available for brunch or dinner. Many restaurants will offer musical entertainment and some will even have the Easter Bunny visit. For something different, visitors can go on an Odyssey cruise.
