ALT-2 Are Hybrid Cars Cool or Uncool – Uncool

From 3arf

The hybrid car is the new phenomenon that is starting to creep into our vehicular culture. Their purpose is to be one part of a more efficient and environmentally-friendly solution. Since we can't seem to make the jump to a pure electric, solar, or nuclear vehicle, we have chosen to take one step in that direction with the "hybrid" car. It combines a standard gas-powered engine with batteries to create a blended power system that is more fuel-efficient and, in theory, better for the environment. Is this a "cool" solution? Perhaps, but I'm not sure if that is the point. Here are a few thoughts on whether a hybrid car is cool or uncool.

AN UNATTRACTIVE BOX

The cars themselves are not necessarily "cool" from an aesthetic standpoint. The current vehicles that are "pure" hybrids have not been the most attractive cars on the road. The Toyota Prius is a good example of this, as it is a rather boxy vehicle, without a lot of "sportiness" to the design. Granted, the look is not exactly the point of building the vehicle, as it is maximized for its utility, not its design. Still, it can get away with it in today's world because cars are increasingly being designed with unusual shapes and lines.

PRETTY IS NOT THE POINT

Of course, there is a certain coolness with some people just from the fact that the car is more environmentally-friendly. The issue has become important enough to some people that they are willing to forsake style for environmental impact. People admire those that are willing to take a stand for their beliefs, so even if the car isn't the most attractive, it is for some people doing something that is more important than image.

Overall, the hybrid car can be viewed as "cool" or "uncool", depending on the audience. It really has to do with your assessment criteria. If you value the look then it might be uncool. If you value the symbolism, then it might be very cool. Manufacturers are also trying to "split the difference" by releasing hybrid versions of "normal" vehicles. Granted, the hybrid nature of these particular vehicles is not very impressive. Sometimes, they only amount to a few more miles per gallon. Plus, the retail price of these vehicles makes them a tough buy for a lot of people. However, in the mind of some people, every little bit helps. This makes the impact worth it, and if they can maintain their style and "coolness", they might take the plunge on a hybrid vehicle.
