Self-employment has a variety of advantages, but these advantages may not always exist. Like in the workforce, self-employed individuals can be working under a variety of different conditions in all kinds of different areas. For instance, a small percentage of people blogging make a six figure salary, and they may have plenty of time and financial security. Alternatively, someone new to freelance writing might need to work multiple hours to make ends meet.

Of course, self-employment still has some notable advantages. For instance, you aren't forced to deal with bosses and coworkers, and if you have an anti-authoritarian personality, this will be a relief. Some people seem to be born to question authority, and the practice of having to listen to a boss can be unpleasant. You may have had an idea that would make the company thousands, but your boss ultimately forces you to do a different project. Your creativity in the workplace is stifled, and your authority over your own body is diminished. When self-employed, you have a much larger set of options. You make the plans and implement them in a manner of your own choosing (within reason, and not in every case of self-employment).

Additionally, a high level of success when self-employed can allow you to pursue additional knowledge as part of your work schedule. Many jobs have you train for a specific position, and if you receive a promotion, it will be doing much of the same thing. The ability to pursue knowledge on a variety of topics is a perk of freelance. You can utilize seemingly unrelated topics to benefit your career and expand your skill set. The self-employed individual can be an inventor in many ways, learning new things and putting them together in different ways.

When your successful as a teacher, doctor, or in another career path, people expect you to continue working. Even as people succeed, the tendency is to work the same hours every week. In many cases, career success results in a higher level of work required throughout the week. Especially when the job isn't something you're passionate about, this can be draining physically and mentally. Self-employment gives you many options if you are successful. You can work short days and work on that novel you've always wanted to complete. It's not for profit - you make enough already. Any monetary success is a bonus, but the practice of pursuing a goal provides additional satisfaction in your life.

Lastly, there is the fact that self-employment can allow you to pursue your goals and dreams. If your ideal career is in blogging, freelance writing, or another self-employed path, you'll be happiest as a self-employed individual. In fact, self-employment is often discouraged in society because it breaks with the mold. While this can make you unhappy at first, you will be happier when you succeed. Petty or not, it's quite enjoyable to succeed despite the discouragement of society. You know you not only overcame the difficulty of pursuing the goal, but you overcame the pressure to quit.
