ALT-20 Motorcyclists should always Wear Helmets – Agree
We are very big into freedom in this country. People are allowed to say certain things, do certain things, and think just about anything they want. There are some that would like that freedom to extend to riding a motorcycle. In their minds, it is their risk, and if they want to take it, that is up to them. I suppose there is some liberty credence to that attitude, but there are ramifications beyond their personal liberties. Here are a few thoughts on why motorcyclists should always wear helmets.
SETTING AN EXAMPLE
It is difficult to argue against the safety of helmets. Therefore, wearing helmets sets an example for the next generation about safe behavior. Even people who do not like to wear helmets will typically acknowledge that it is safer than going without a helmet. Over time, standards have begun to change in society so we may get to a point where future generations all wear helmets.
HELPING PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES
We do allow personal freedoms in society but we also have rules that keep people safe and essentially "save them from themselves". For example, we have speed limits on the road because most people could not handle higher speed, even if a few could. Helmets are the same way. Some people can ride safely and never get into an accident where a helmet would save their lives. But some safety precautions are required "just in case" something happens on the road.
TAXPAYER DOLLARS
The other reality is that when someone does not wear a helmet, it could affect more people than just the individual. For example, the person might sustain a larger injury without a helmet, which could require the use of more emergency vehicles. This could delay more traffic and create congestion. Therefore, some places have laws because they want personal safety, but they also recognize that accidents cost taxpayer dollars.
Overall, there aren't a lot of reasons not to wear a helmet besides personal preference. States are sometimes hesitant to legislate against liberty, but at the same time they don't allow people to do reckless things just because they have freedom. Wear a helmet, and you may live through your next accident.
