ALT-1 Why take the Time to Write a Letter of Resignation
When you decide to resign from your current job, it is very important to write a letter of resignation. It is considered proper protocol when leaving any occupation. Take a few minutes to write your letter before you officially resign. When writing your resignation letter keep it positive, and show your appreciation of your job you had with the company.
Timing
When you decide to quit your job make sure you give proper notice. Each company has different requirements for the amount of time you need to give when resigning from your job. Typically two weeks’ notice will suffice. When you sit down with your boss to give him or her notice speak professionally. This is not a time to talk down about the company. Once you have quit, hand your boss the letter.
Professional
When you write a letter of resignation shows your current company you are a professional employee. This gives you the opportunity to put into writing all the positive projects you have done for the company. You can take the time to describe how you have enjoyed working for the company and you wish only the best for your boss and fellow employees.
Do not burn bridges
After you have quit your job it is important to remain on good terms with your company. Leaving with grace and aplomb will assist you in your future job and if you decide to search for a job in the future. By handing your boss a letter of resignation it will keep your relationship with your current employer strong. Showing your boss and your company that you appreciated working for them will help you getting a recommendation for the future.
A positive record
There may be a time when you do quit a job without a letter of resignation. If this happens a company may have turnover in their employees. Your letter will remain as a record of why you decided to quit your job. It will have a record of all the positive tasks you completed for the company. Keep a copy of the letter for your own documentation.
When you write the letter of resignation hand one to both your direct supervisor and the human resources department. In your letter write your positive contributions you have made for the company. Be sure to thank them for the time you have been employed. Leave with a positive attitude and you will have a recommendation for the future.
