Most people are going to spend a good portion of their lives at work; this is one of the primary reasons that it is important to pursue a career that interests you.  Here are some of the other reasons why this decision is so critical.

Prevents job dissatisfaction

If you pursue a career because of money alone, you may find that in the first few years you are very pleased. However, the longer you are at a job the less the money comes to mean. Having a career that does not interest you can result injob dissatisfactionin the long run.

Prevents lack of skill development

Those who have pursued a career that does not hold their long term interest may find themselves not willing to develop their skills further. This can result in a vicious cycle of not having skills to pursue a career that may interest them and not being willing to gain the skills needed to advance. This never ending cycle is difficult to escape.

Long term ramifications

The longer term ramifications that result in failure to pursue a career that interests you go well beyond the job.  A career that holds little interest may ultimately cause you undue stress. Stress can lead to health issues. In addition, it could also result in your feeling discontent in relationships outside of work. Not having a career that interests you can cause tension where none should exist and have other consequences that you might not have considered.

Loss of motivation

If you consistently have to work in an environment where you are unhappy, you may find that you lack motivation for improving your circumstances. This can result in further job dissatisfaction, not doing your job as well as you could and potentially being fired from your job.  A lack of motivation on the job also can make a day seem far longer than it needs to be.

Summary

Many people seek out a career based on earnings potential or other factors. However, in the long run, those who pursue a career that interests them may find they are far more satisfied with both their personal lives as well as their professional lives.  There are many reasons why it is important to pursue a career that interests you, these are only a few of them.
