ALT-1 Why Valentines Day is not for everyone
Valentine’s Day is a day that people tell their significant others how much they love each other because the stores tell us to do so. While it is a great holiday for some, there are others that it just isn’t for. Besides the obvious group being those that are single, there are many couples that don’t want to celebrate or they just choose not to.
-Flying Solo-
Valentine’s Day can be a painful reminder to those that are single of their current relationship status. They see lovers exchanging gifts and going off on holiday together while they are sitting at home renting a movie. Even though it is becoming more and more acceptable to stay single for longer or even permanently, Valentine’s Day can make one feel lonely and second guess the positive aspects of being single.
-Not in a good place-
Of those that are a couple, not all are in a good place in the relationship currently. Some are on the verge of breaking apart or have been hurt by their partner. Seeing everyone else celebrate Valentine’s Day just reminds these people of where their relationship currently is. It is almost a worse situation to be in then being free and single on the holiday.
-Against Consumerism-
While people are out buying cute gifts and chocolates for their valentine, there are those that are taking a stand against consumerism. They do not believe in celebrating their love just because it is being advertised that you have to buy something for the other person to really show that you love them. They are the group that tells the other person that they love them in different and usually better ways then a box of chemically altered chocolate.
-Bad Valentine’s Days Past-
Even when one is very happy in their relationship sometimes the Valentine’s Days from the past have put a permanent dislike of the holiday in their hearts. They have nothing against celebrating their love, they just refuse to do it on Valentine’s Day. These are the couples usually still exchange gifts for the holiday, but just not on the day itself.
While a good deal of people enjoy Valentine’s Day, it is just not for everyone. It is a good idea to keep in mind the feelings of those around you and not bring up Valentine’s Day if they are in not in a position to celebrate it happily. If you are one of the one’s that enjoy the holiday by all means go out and celebrate just don’t expect everyone to have the same point of view that you do.
