ALT-1 Why Thanksgiving is more than only an American Holiday
The holiday, Thanksgiving, has been celebrated for years by Americans. However, the truth is Thanksgiving is a day that should be celebrated all over the world. It is not just a day where Americans should come together and watch football over turkey, but rather Thanksgiving should be a day to be thankful. Thanks-giving is being thankful and that in itself has a stronger meaning than an American holiday. When people think of Thanksgiving, they should think of thankfulness, which should not just be expressed by Americans.
Thanksgiving is not just an American holiday, but a family day, Many memories are made through that day, and this holiday should be celebrated all over the world. For example, families get together on Thanksgiving and make a list of things that they are thankful for. Families pray together and enjoy sharing gratitude and appreciating what God has given them. That is not just meant for Americans, but every culture could strengthen their family values if they had a day like Thanksgiving to teach them about the importance of families being thankful for what they have.
Thought for others is often the focus of Thanksgiving. This would therefore make it more than just an American holiday. It is an 'others' day, and people have the opportunity to express their thankfulness by giving to others. This makes it more of a global holiday. Some families will volunteer to help the needy and the sick. This teaches people more than the typical American holiday meaning of eating, and watching television.
America holidays are often very materialistic, and Thanksgiving is not a day where a lot of people go shopping. Man has made "Black Friday" because man has to associate holidays with gifts. However, the Thanksgiving Day itself is not associated with giving. This is one reason it is not just an American holiday, because gift-giving is not normal on this day.
Thanksgiving day is one of the few sacred days left. It was started by Americans, and would be considered by many to be an American holiday. However, the reasons mentioned above will lead one to realize that it is not just an American holiday; it is God's day. If this is understood, more countries would celebrate this day in the future and reap the benefits from it.
