ALT-1 What to consider in a first Car for a Young Driver
Teens may think they know what they want, but as parents we should know what's best for them. Even if the teen is paying for their own car, the parents need to ensure that the car is safe. It is best to always to find out the history on used cars. You want to make sure that the car hasn't been in any major accidents. You have to consider price as well. You want something that won't break the bank and something that they could afford if they had to pay for it on their own.
A family car is a nice route to take because generally these cars are safer and built heavier and stronger. My first vehicle was a 1987 Dodge Dakota. You have to remember that teens are going to have accidents. Although my truck wouldn't sound like a safe vehicle, no matter what came in my bumper's way, I always walked away with no injuries and my truck had limited injuries as well.(I had been in quite a few mishaps in this truck) The older trucks are especially built tough. They are higher up to see more of your surroundings and have less blind spots.
If your teen wrecks a 500 dollar truck, at least it wasn't a fifteen thousand dollar car. It is best to buy a vehicle with air bags intact and make sure that there are enough seat belts for the alloted number of seating in the car. Not only will your child be in the car, but a few of their friends will be as well. Make sure the car is up to date on it's servicing. Always have your own mechanic check out the vehicle before purchasing, regardless of the year of the car.
Make sure your teen knows safe driving and how to handle the car under certain circumstances. How your child handles the car under rough circumstances will make a big difference in the safety. Promote seat belts and restrict how many people can be in the car at a time. Make sure you test drive the car before buying it. Check to make sure that all of the paint colors match. If the paint scheme is some what off from other parts of the car, then chances are the car has been wrecked and touched up.
So don't just run right out and buy your child that new, super fast sports car they have always wanted. Sometimes the safest vehicles come with the smaller price tags.It can be a scary time for any parent whose child is getting their first car. Just remember that above all else, safety should be the main priority.
