Being stranded in a vehicle is an annoying and frustrating situation any time of the year, but it especially dangerous during the winter months when temperatures and the elements can be extremely dangerous. All vehicles should include an emergency road kit that can provides convenient and possibly even life saving equipment. These kits can be purchased at any home and garden, department, or car care store. These normally include the basics such as jumper cables, hazard cones, some elementary tools, and an emergency first aid kit. However, there are some necessities that may not always be included. One of the biggest threats to winter driving is getting stuck in the snow or on the ice. Ideally, with the right equipment, the vehicle can be freed. Small foldable shovels are available that can easily be tucked away in the trunk. It is also a good idea to also include some traction producing element to help free tires from icy patches. Kitty litter, a bag of sand, or some cardboard or other material that can be tucked under the tire are good options. Ice scrapers and brushes are vital for clearing windows and headlights. Since these incidents do not always occur during the daylight hours, it is also a good idea to have a good high powered flashlight, lantern, or a spotlight that can be plugged into the cigarette lighter in the vehicle.Of course now, nearly everyone has a cell phone for emergencies, but it is still necessary to include a car charger to keep it operational. Still, in the event that it may be some time before help arrives, or in cases where the vehicle is not running , it is also important to keep warm. In the winter, every vehicle should be equipped with heavy coats, boots, hats, gloves, and a blanket or two. Small foldable thermal blankets are also available as are heat producing hand and feet warmers. No one expects to be trapped in their vehicle for any length of time, but the odds are greater during the winter months. Carrying some bottled water and a few associated non perishable snacks along can provide some sustenance until help arrives and is especially important if there are children involved. No one expects to become involved in an emergency situation, and the odds are that the emergency materials may never need to be used. However, when the unexpected happens, it is far better to be prepared.
