ALT-1 What is an Ebook

From 3arf

The e in eBook stands for electronic as in email. Just a short time ago an eBook could be delivered within your emails, but eBooks have grown and now have to be compressed into zip files and forwarded on as an attachment.

eBooks today have become the electronic library of tomorrow, every topic and subject can now be found in an eBook, from the literary classics of yesteryear to the sci-fi of the future.

The initial attraction of eBooks appears to have begun with the advances made in online marketing. Early businesses eager to sell their ideas to novices, who wished to begin trading online, saw an opportunity to supply a document which was then delivered as soon as the "newbie" paid by credit card. Very soon thousands upon thousands of "make money from home" eBooks appeared on Ebay and throughout the internet.

In our quest for instant information, the popularity of receiving facts and data immediately sent through to our in-boxes ensured the success of this early venture. Soon eBook authors were writing on every subject imaginable.

There was a bonus side though, overtime the general classification of eBooks started to diversify and we now can search and discover an eBook to supply answers to any demand we request. From travel guides to cookbooks to reference text books, in fact anything. One of the biggest advantages of storing an eBook on your computer is the ability to print out any page or section that you wish to have a hard copy of. Perfect for the chef in the kitchen preparing a new dish, no spills on an expensive cookbook, for children one page at a time can be printed out from an activities eBook, no squabbles over who gets to color the page!

Modern technology has now made advances with the eBook; the larger electronic companies have produced an eBook reader which is actually smaller in size than the average paperback. You can transfer eBooks from your computer to the reader in the same way as you download music to your mp3 player. The device is capable of storing up to 160 eBooks for you to enjoy anywhere, while commuting or on vacation, you can control text size and it will even remember your page. Thousands more eBooks can be stored on memory sticks.

Where the eBook goes from here, no-one knows yet. I personally cannot see the end of physical hard and paperback books; an eBook does not have that wonderful paper feel and smell. But as I still have albums on vinyl, 8-track and cassette, what do I know!
