ALT-1 What Makes you Hate your Job

From 3arf

Very few people have the option not to work, which means sometimes you end up settling for a job that is less than ideal. Finding a job in the first place can be stressful enough and once you have a regular income it isn’t always easy to find the motivation to look for another job, even if you hate what you are currently doing. Plus, it is always in the back of your mind that you could end up hating another job just as much, particularly if you find the range of jobs open to you limited by your experience and qualifications.Virtually everyone complains that they hate their job at one time or another and so you are by no means alone when it comes to hating your job. Some people are just better at putting up with a job they hate than others! There can be a whole variety of reasons why you hate your job. It may be that you have an unskilled job which requires very little thinking and a lot of repetitive action. When you know exactly what you will be doing every day of the working week you may come to hate your job, especially if you feel that the work you do is a waste of time. Not everyone can go around saving the planet and changing the world and so if you’re working in a shop, serving customers or packing boxes in a warehouse, you may begin to wonder what the point is. However, you keep going into work because otherwise you wouldn’t be able to pay the bills and no matter how much you hate your job, it would be far worse if you had no job at all. Even if you have a skilled job that requires specialist skills or knowledge you could become dissatisfied with your work. It may be that you’re overwhelmed and do not have enough time to give to your social life or family, leaving you depressed.Stress can play a big factor in making you hate your job, particularly when you feel that your life is out of balance. However, it may not be that you’re stressed out by the large quantities of work you have to deal with or the tight deadlines you have to meet, but rather the fact that your career doesn’t seem to be going in the direction you had hoped it would. Whether you have a high-powered, high-status job or a more lowly role within a company it can be frustrating when all your hard work goes unnoticed and unrewarded, as you start to question why you put in so much effort.Another potential reason to hate your job is because of the people you have to work alongside. It may be that you do not get on with your colleagues, which makes life more difficult, or it could be having to deal with awkward customers all day long that leaves you wishing you could win the lottery and quit your job.In an ideal world, if you hated your job you would just quit, but, unfortunately, when the economy is in the doldrums and you have substantial financial responsibilities you generally do not have the freedom to do this. You therefore have to try to find the positives in your work and stop dwelling on what you hate about your job if you are to get any satisfaction out of life.
