ALT-1 Valentines Day a Single Rose or Bouquet – Rose
It has to be a single rose, but for me it has to be a single rose with a difference.
The rose would need to be red, the same colour that we associate with the heart and with love.
It would also need to made of silk, so that it lasts forever, like the love that it is given with, also because I dislike to see so many flowers cut for their beauty and then discarded a few days later when their last few days of life have gone.
I do not want the love it is given with to die as the rose dies, so it has to live on as silk, to be seen forever.
You are supposed to be showing your undying love so make it a rose that matches that, a rose to be treasured for all time.
As for the fact that it is a single rose, well this to me signifies a single love, and that is what you would need to have for me.
You can give a rose to your mum, grandmother, daughter or whoever you wish, just to show your love for them, but for me I expect just one rose for one love - yours for me.
I do not need a bouquet, I do not need you to spend a fortune, I just need to know.
Perhaps we should look at why Valentine's Day exists, although there is a lot of mystery surrounding this.
The story that mostly seems to come to mind is the one of the priest called Valentine who defied the Emperor Claudius in his decision to outlaw marriage for young men that were to become soldiers, he thought they would make better fighters.
Valentine thought this was unfair and performed marriages in secret, but was ordered to be put to death when Claudius discovered what he was doing.
Legend has it that Valentine sent the first "Valentine" greeting himself to a young girl he had fallen in love with whilst in prison, she was said to have been a visitor to him, possibly even the jailor's daughter.
Whether it is true or not we will maybe never know but legend has it that he wrote this girl a letter and signed it "From your Valentine" and this saying is still used on cards today.
It has been more commercialised these days and that is why so much money is spent and you are encouraged to buy expensive gifts and flowers but in reality the true sense of St.Valentine's Day was a simple letter (now sent as a card)with three simple words.
I know gifts are often given too, chocolates, candy, even balloons, but for me that single red rose will do, it says it all.
