ALT-1 Strategies for getting yourself Promoted

From 3arf

Every human on earth wants to be promoted. It's nature. You want to be rewarded for your good hard work. You want to feel appreciated and needed. There are ways to get this done.

Find a higher up to be your mentor. Do everything they want and do it right; Do not crawl and kiss the ground they walk on, but just do what you need to for them to show you can do the job and more.

Keep track of everything you do that makes the company better, helps sales, what have you. When talk of a promotion is heard, tell your mentor in conversation what you have done and show the resume you have kept. The fact that you have your stuff together may impress them even more.

Promote yourself. I know, we are taught not to play the "look what I did" card, but in this case, go for it. Let your bosses know what you have done, how well it was done and if you intend on doing something else again. Keep your boss(es) updated on what you are doing and what you have done also. Keeping them up to speed never hurts anything.

Sometimes it is good to know your boss as a friend, but you really should try to keep it in the office. Just have your boss know you on a more personal level. Take time to ask questions about what may keep you from a future promotion and how to get over or get rid of them. Let them know you are interested, but do not over stress it. You may annoy them buy following them around telling them how much you wan the job.

Pay attention to trends and events and build on your knowledge base. You need to know the job before they would like to promote you. Ask to try something new, ask how something is done and take notes. If they see you making an effort, they just may consider you a little bit more.

Ask to do more and take on more responsibilities. Managers and bosses like to see that someone wants to get the job done in a proper time and manner. You will impress them and they will want to bring you up the ladder.

Acting professionally is a big part of the equation as well. Dressing properly is important and tells management you understand what the job entails. Stay positive, never whine and make yourself known to be a problem solver. Stick out from the employees.

And while strutting your feathers, also be a team player. Do not leave everyone to wonder what you are doing. Work with them, let them know your thoughts so that when you do get the promotion, everyone knows you were the right person for the job.
