ALT-1 Questions to ask when Buying a Car

From 3arf

Buy a car is an extremely important decision.  Hopefully you will have this car for years to come, so you will want to make sure that you make the right choice.  The following are some questions that you may want to ask when buying a car.

What is the gas mileage?Gas prices can add up very quickly, especially if you have a long commute.  Cars vary greatly on the amount of gas mileage that they get, and as the days, months and years go by, this can start to make a difference in your pocketbook.  Obviously, the better gas mileage, the better it will be.  At one end of the spectrum you have the smaller cars along with the hybrids.  At the other end of the spectrum you have your bigger cars.  You will want to take this into account when thinking about how much it will cost to run the car.  Also, you will need to stop for gas more often with the cars that have less mileage.  Make sure you find out both the city and the highway mileage.

What warranties come with the car?

Many cars come with a warranty, which can significantly reduce the repair costs should something go wrong in a specified amount of time and to a specified mileage.  Get a detailed account of the exact warranty that comes with the car.  Most new cars and some used cars will come with this.  Make sure you know what is included – and more importantly – what is not included.  Make sure you know what will void the warranty.  Read the fine print.

What are the safety features on the car?

For most people, safety is paramount, and some cars are definitely safer than others.  Have the person tell you about the features of the various cars such as air bags and so forth.  You should actually look up safety ratings before you go to look at the car, but having the dealer explain them to you as well can be helpful.

Has the car been in any accidents? (used cars)

This question is only applicable to used cars, but it is an important one.  Having a major accident can affect a car, and although you don’t have to immediately disqualify a automobile, you should be informed so that you can make a decision based on all of the data available.

Asking the above questions may help you make a better decision when searching for a car.
