Some people are counted on to do great things, but there is always a spot for those who put forth effort to be the best they can be. Companies value those who are there just to make others work harder. It is still a respectable reason to have a job.
Know how to put yourself in a position to catch a few breaks. Some people have all the luck. Others realize that luck is simply a combination of preparation and opportunity. Always be ready to fill in at that presentation, or to have the key facts ready to win an account when your co-worker suddenly blanks. This will make you look clutch in the office and will win some major respect points from the boss.
Be flexible and be able to adapt. If you are able to take a few jobs that don't quite match what you want to do, or are willing to fill in elsewhere from time to time it will get you places. Others will see you as a team player and you will build experience and versatility to boot. It never hurts to learn everything you can in order to boost your resume and meet new people along the way.
