ALT-1 Office Etiquette
The office cubicle allows companies to save money by increasing employee density and reducing the total amount of required space. Bringing people closer together invariably results in the need to foster rules ofcubicle etiquettein order for everyone to efficiently coexist. Good manners and common sense go a long way in keeping friction to a minimum, and here are some valuable tips for maintaining a comfortable work environment for everyone.
1. Don’t hover – Treat your fellow workers’ space as their own. The fact that you can see over the office cubicle wall doesn’t mean that you can eavesdrop and invade their space any time you want. Pretend there are real walls and a door and don’t pop up or enter without an invitation.
2. Keep your conversations inside your space – Noise levels can get very elevated if multiple conversations are occurring around the cubicles. Sitting down inside a cubicle allows the walls to buffer and dampen the sound so that it doesn’t carry as far. If music is permitted, wear headphones. If you have to make a private call, take a break and go to a location where you can use your cell phone.
3. Minimize distractions – Arrange your workspace so that your line of sight is away from the office cubicle entry. This avoids unintentionaleye contactthat could attract unwanted visitors. Never sneak up and surprise someone who has their back to the cubicle opening. Concentrating is hard enough without being shocked from behind.
4. Decorate tastefully – While most companies have policies regarding what you can put in your office cubicle, you should use your own discretion as well. The best approach is to avoid things that others might find offensive, even if they aren’t necessarily offensive to you. Your office cubicle is visible throughout the day to employees and visitors, and you should want to present a professional image to both. Customers are more likely to do business with a company that adheres to high standards of professional demeanor and décor. In addition, keep your office cubicle neat and organized.
5. Remember all the senses – In addition to being able to see and hear what your coworkers are doing, you can easily detect whatever scents may be wafting through the air. Be sensitive to your coworkers when wearing colognes and perfumes, and eating aromatic hot lunches at your desk.
6. Show respect – An office cubicle can’t be locked up, but you should respect the privacy of others as if it were locked. Their phone, computer and other office accessories are for their use and should not be used without permission.
Being considerate of others is easy when you think about how you would like to be treated in return. Be sensitive to those around you and most will reciprocate without controversy or confrontation. Goodwill and a positive attitude go a long way in eliminating problems in the workplace.
