ALT-1 Mothers Day for Educators Lesson Plans
If you are an educator who seeks to create a Mothers Day lesson, rather than a craft lesson producing a gift for Mothers Day, there are several things you can do that will help to teach your pupils about mothers, and stimulate their interest in the subject.
1-Mothers in History
For this lesson you could have previously asked your pupils to participate by getting them to research a famous mother from history and to bring what they have learned into the lesson to present to the class.
They may like to bring any materials that they find useful as props such as pictures from magazine articles or printouts from the computer.
If the pupils are a little too young for this you canpresent some stories about different mothers through the ages in a simple way and keep the interest of the children by sticking to a hands on approach, where they join in by producing a picture of each mother after your description of the mothers personality.
This helps the children to be more creative and to really think about what you have said about each mother.
2-What My Mother Means to Me
In this lesson pupils draw a picture of their own mother and describe her, writing the descriptive words under the picture. Use your judgement to decide whether individual children would benefit from making a presentation in-front of the class, or whether this would be too much pressure for them.
This is a simple and enjoyable task, and provides the child with the picture to take home and present to their mother as a mothers day gift.
3-Mothers in Tales
For this lesson the children look at the many stories, poems and nursery rhymes which mention mothers.
Examples are, Old Mother Hubbard, Mother Goose and the old woman who lived in the shoe.
This lesson can be adapted to suit pupils of most ages and can be fun with singing and rhyming. Simple instruments, such as shakers and tambourine's, can be used to accompany tunes. Children may like to illustrate the tales, or to be creative and make up some of their own to read to the class.
Mothers day lessons should both fun and creative, as well as stimulating for children's minds. As long as you provide lessons which your pupils enjoy they will learn while wanting to find out more on occasions in the future.
