ALT-1 Is it Worth it to Join the Union
There are many good reason and benefits to joining a Union. You actually have more rights as a worker if you are in a Union as a Union's Job is to look after it's members by getting better deals for them. Like better pay, better holidays and sick entitlement.
A union Rep is there to help members with any problems they may have involving the workplace. If you have a disciplinary action, being in the Union can be to your advantage by having a Union Rep who understands employment law present my be the difference in you losing or keeping your job.
It can be expensive to be a member, some Unions charge upward of £11 a month to be a member, but this is outweighed by the benefits you would receive if you were a member.

Like I said above representation by a trained Union Rep at disciplinary meetings.
Help claiming compensation if you are injured at work. The Unions Claims team will deal with it for you once the Health and Safety Rep has helped you fill in the accident form and sent it in.
Ability to vote about wages and other important matters that affect you in the workplace. It can give you a sense of control.
Help and advice with workplace issues you may have. The Rep will even take it to management for you.
Grants for pregnancy. USDAW refund 29 weeks of your membership fees once you return from maternity leave.
A Union will fight for the rights of its members. It negotiates with employers to get the best deals it can for its members. The more members a Union has the more clout it has when it comes to these negotiations.
It is a good idea to join a Union if there is one within your workplace but don't let anyone tell you you have to or not to join as it is ultimately your decision.
But remember this - every person who doesn't join, weakens the Union and reduces the chances of getting a good deal at work for everyone.

So if you want to feel safe at work then joining the Union is a great way to do this.
It is worth the money to join the union as the benefits you pay for would cost more individually and some you would not be able to get.
It took me a year to join the Union where I work and I'm now a Rep.
