ALT-1 Is Valentines Day just Candy and Flowers

Cards. Diamonds. Jewelry. Teddy Bears. Chocolate. Heart Shaped Boxes. The list goes on. Nothing says "I love you" like spending lots of cash - or so it seems.

Like every other holiday, Valentines Day has turned commercial - a ploy set by manufacturers to use the holiday to their monetary advantage. I personally don't believe in this - in fact, I am against it.

Now don't get me wrong - I am not against cupid. I am a hopeless romantic at heart. But you know what? I choose to spend the entirety of the year telling my partner just how much I love them. I don't need to give them gifts or flowers on Valentines Day for them to know that I care. They don't expect that from me - and I don't expect that from them.

I believe that Valentines Day was a holiday designed by the people who always felt uncomfortable to share their feelings with their loved ones. This holiday gives us an excuse, and even pushes us to do something romantic - and most of the time, people result in saying it with flowers, or some other purchased gift.

I never understood the love behind the purchasing of roses for your sweetheart. Flowers fade, flowers wilt, their petals fall off and dry out - turning into the soil in which they grew from.

Flowers die - just what does that say about your relationship?

If I ever feel up to being lovey-dovey, I write my partner a letter telling them how much I love them. Even though I live with him, I know it's nice to get letters just like when we first met. Reminding the person you love that you still feel the same for them as you did when you first laid eyes on them, is the best present that you can ever get.

Remind them that your love for them is still just like the very first time you met.

Valentines Day doesn't need to be spent lingering on material things - what we are forgetting is that this day is to celebrate the love that the two of you share. Rather than loving them on one specific day, why not love them every day of the year?
