ALT-1 Is Thanksgiving Overlooked

From 3arf

Although Thanksgiving is a very important holiday, it is largely ignored both commercially and in the media. Every major holiday has their t-shirts, candies, movies and even toys. Halloween of course has costumes, candy and scary movies for example. Christmas is both a religious celebration and a commercial phenomenon. The official "holiday season" kicks off with the end of summer, or so it would seem. As soon as outdoor temperatures drop below seventy, stores start slowly stocking Halloween items. Halloween trick or treaters have barely filled their treat bags when stores are putting Christmas items out for sale. All these wonderful things with snowmen, santa claus and reindeer on them. Lights galore, holiday music fills the air waves and gift wrapping is available at participating stores.

Wait a second, Thanksgiving is between Halloween and Christmas, right? Oh yeah, turkey is on sale for that. Where are the Thanksgiving day socks and t-shirts? No turkey shaped candies? What about the festive Thanksgiving strings of lights and the cartoons? There are very few things associated with the celebration of Thanksgiving except for the sale of food. If you are lucky, you might find a store that carries Thanksgiving day cards. How nice. Oh you can find Thanksgiving themed napkins, tablecloths and salt and pepper shakers to adorn your table. You can even find serving dishes in fun shapes.

Perhaps Thanksgiving really is not ignored; it just is not a commercial hit. There is no count-down of shopping days left till Thanksgiving and no one offers to gift wrap your pumpkin pie. There are Thanksgiving day parades and sometimes you can catch a movie on cable about being thankful.

The point is if a religious celebration grew into the biggest commercial holiday of the year, why not Thanksgiving too? Some people may find turkey or ham-shaped candy adorable. A few t-shirts would be kind of nice. What makes Thanksgiving so easy to forget? All you hear about is the feast and the football game. It seems like the only noteworthy thing about Thanksgiving is that it is the one day a year that it is socially acceptable to eat too much.

The only problem with Thanksgiving being overlooked, is that it is a very important part of American history. If it were not for the Native Americans and the Pilgrims sitting down to that historical meal, there would not be a reason to feast and watch football. It is rather sad that such an important historical event has been reduced to an excuse to over-eat and fall asleep watching sports.
