ALT-1 How to get a Job Fast
1. Be open to many options. If you really need a job FAST, then you need to accept that it may not be exactly the kind of job that you are looking for.
2. Have a long term plan and a short term plan. The short term plan may be "wait tables and deliver pizza to get food on my table and my bills paid." The long term plan would be more like "take classes, seek certifications, gain experience, and make connections to get my dream job in the future." There's no reason for you not to have a job TOMORROW, but you should also make sure that you're going somewhere in five years.
3. Network, network, network. Cash in on any connections you've developed over the years. Be on the phone RIGHT NOW with everyone, from former bosses to neighbors to sisters in law, who could possibly get you a job. Often, it's not what you but who you know.
4. Cold call, send out resumes, post on message boards and monster.com AND hit the streets. No one strategy will work in every situation, so develop a multi-faceted plan of attack.
5. Whenever possible, make a personal connection with the employment office of the place where you want a job. It's much harder for them to say no to someone they've met than to a faceless resume.
